Primary Responsibilities

HDR is currently looking for a companywide Transportation Planning and Technology Integration Practice Leader to complement our growing transportation business. The position will collaborate with key leaders at the local, regional, and national levels to support the growth and development of our transportation planning, and mobility and operational technology services. The ideal candidate will possess extensive public and private sector experience, subject matter expertise, and strong leadership skills to oversee the practice while creating value for our clients by integrating our core services with emerging industry trends and business management practices.

In the role of Transportation Planning & Technology Practice Leader, we'll count on you to:

  • Take responsibility for companywide integration of planning (at policy, systems, and corridor levels considering all modes of transportation and users of all abilities) and technology (ITS, TSM&O, CAV, Smart Mobility, EV, etc.) to add value to our transportation projects, develop cutting-edge solutions, and elevate our practices.
  • Work with other Practice Leaders to develop transformative solutions that will enable our clients to take advantage of emerging transportation trends (automated-connected-electric-shared vehicles, micro-transit, micro-mobility, big data, etc.), set strategic goals and design implementable solutions while future-proofing investments; and also allow HDR to maintain thought leadership position in the industry.
  • Monitor transportation technology policies and initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels involving all modes of transportation and help clients with seizing the opportunities by leveraging the HDR talent pool.
  • Actively drive open communication with the Practice Group members regarding current/projected production needs; and collaborate with areas to influence staffing and expertise levels.
  • Identify market opportunities in close coordination with Area Business Development Leaders and develop winning pursuit strategies.
  • Develop client relationships in close coordination with Area Business Development Leaders and local HDR staff.
  • Support technology elements of strategic pursuits and be the differentiator.
  • Identify industry talent and work with Area and Corporate leadership to attract and retain staff.
  • Deliver high quality programs and projects with the goal to serve the clients and bring value to the Practice.
  • Oversee delivery of project services and deliverables to meet client expectations.
  • Maintain high standards for quality and consistency of the HDR service brand.
  • Maintain qualification packages and staff skills matrix that can be readily utilized for project pursuits. Assist with the development of marketing materials including proposals.
  • Lead workshare communications that result in technical excellence and enhanced utilization.
  • Advocate for professional development of staff and development of production tools: best practices, technical policies and procedures, papers and presentations, and automation tools.
  • Serve as a project manager on major contracts, and leverage HDR's global expertise to deliver quality work on time, while meeting or exceeding client expectations.
  • Represent HDR at state, regional, and national level professional organizations such as AASHTO, ITS America, and the ITE.
  • Serve as a brand ambassador, and represent HDR at national and international conferences, market HDR's success stories, provide services to the transportation practice at large to help advance the safety and mobility goals of our client organizations.
  • Act as role model of our values and code of conduct, as well as professional/ethical/business standards expected by specific clients and required by licensing/credentialing entities.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with planning and technology projects and programs.
  • The successful candidate must have knowledge of, and experience with, technology trends and industry practices.
  • Experienced in the development and management of diverse teams.
  • Subject matter expertise and industry thought leadership.
  • Must have well-developed analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Planning, Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
  • Professional registration such as AICP, PE, PTOE, PTP, PMP preferred.
